Winter Wheat and Barley Production Falls in 2020
WASHINGTON, DC – Winter wheat production in the U.S. totaled 1.17 billion bushels in 2020, an 11 percent reduction from last year. According to USDA’s Annual Small Grain Agricultural Survey, yields this past growing season averaged just a tick under 51 bushels per acre down more than 5 percent from 2019 on a total of 23 million acres – also 6 percent lower than last season. USDA also estimated oat production at 65.4 million bushels, a 23 percent increase year over year as yields increased slightly to 65.1 bushels per acre. Barley production decreased 4 percent to 165 million bushels while rye production nationally expanded 9 percent to 11.5 million bushels.
