U.S. Pork Exports Shatter Value and Volume Records
DENVER, CO – Though many will want to forget 2020, U.S. pork producers may not be in that same camp. According to data released by USDA and compiled by the U.S. Meat Export Federation (USMEF), the nearly 3 million metric tons of pork exports during the year shatter the previous record and the value of those exports followed suit. Pork export values for 2020 rose 11 percent to a record $7.7 billion while new annual import records were set by China/Hoong Kong, Central America, Vietnam, and Chile. In addition, USMEF says strong fourth-quarter growth was attributed to major purchases from Japan and Mexico. For the full year, exports of pork muscle cuts hit a record of 2.5 million metric tons, a 15 percent year over year increase, and the value also set a new all-time record of $6.7 billion, a 12 percent increase over 2019.
