Texas Drought Deepens In Spite of Recent Moisture

AUSTIN, TX – Despite some much-needed moisture across Texas over the past week, the latest drought map for conditions as of December 29, 2020, shows little change from the previous week. Some improvements may appear in next week’s map, according to Dr. Mark Wentzel, a hydrologist with the Texas Water Development Board after storms on the final two days of 2020 produced an inch or more of moisture to large areas of Central and East Texas. Currently, 81 percent of the state is dealing with some level of drought and some areas of the state are currently experiencing the worst drought conditions since the historic drought of 2011. “Because of a statewide lack of rainfall over the last 90 days,” Wentzel explains, “even areas whose rainfall totals for 2020 were above average (north-central, northeast, and South Texas) are now experiencing drought.”
