The United States played virtual host early in the week to trade officials from Canada and Mexico during the first meeting of the USMCA Free Trade Commission.
Despite COVID-19 challenges, Canada remained a leading destination for U.S. agricultural exports in 2020, with high-value food and beverage exports reaching $17 billion.
U.S terms of trade with Mexico advanced 4.9 percent for the year ended in March 2021, the largest year-over-year increase since the index was first published in December 2017.
Over the last quarter-century, the United States has become one of the largest agricultural importers in the world.
As a key component of the new USMCA trade agreement, Canada agreed to allow wheat grown in the United States for import purposes to receive an official Canadian grade as long as the variety was approved in that country.
According to the Economic Research Service, the total value of intraregional agricultural trade among all three NAFTA countries reached more than $95 billion last year, compared with $16.6 billion in 1993 – one year before NAFTA’s implementation.
