South Texas Citrus Losses Set Foundation For Disaster
BROWNSVILLE, TX – At least $300 million; that’s an initial estimate of citrus crop losses in South Texas following a historic arctic blast last week. Texas Citrus Mutual’s early estimates are based on crop loss information from Cameron, Hidalgo, and Willacy counties where about 20 percent of the orange and more than 30 percent of the grapefruit crop was still on the tree, awaiting harvest. Also, experts expect a total loss of the 200 acres of lemons and limes, and cool-season crops like leafy greens, beets, cabbage, and celery. With additional losses in row-crop and livestock industries, the impact of the winter weather will easily surpass $1 million.
