Scott Expected to Chair Next House Agriculture Committee
WASHINGTON, DC – Though the House of Representatives will remain under Democratic control in the 117th Congress, voters in Minnesota’s 7th district failed to back the current Chairman of the House Agriculture Committee, Collin Peterson. His loss has provided a path for Rep. David Scott (GA-13) to become the next Chairman of the Committee, the first Democrat other than Peterson since Kika de la Garza from Texas in 1994. Scott won support this week from the Democratic Steering and Policy Committee over dairyman Rep. Jim Costa (CA-16) and the House Democratic Caucus is expected to confirm the recommendation in a Thursday vote, making him the first member from Georgia to ever lead the agriculture committee. On the Republican side of the ledger, Rep. G.T. Thompson (PA-15) has been chosen at the next Ranking Member of the Committee, replacing the retiring Mike Conaway (TX-11).
