Most Agricultural Landlords Live Within Hour of Farms
WASHINGTON, DC – What role do most landlords have in the operation of their farms? That’s a question the Economic Research Service (ERS) has been asking and according to a seven-year-old study, the answer, with 39 percent of cropland rented 80 percent of that is owned by landlords outside of the day-to-day operation. Actually, most could have some daily involvement as 67 percent of those surveyed live within 50 miles of their rented acreage and 91 percent live within 200 miles. ERS says nonoperator landlords were more likely to be retired farm operators or descendants who inherited agricultural land, rather than investors from more distant parts of the country.
