For two pounds of bread, worth $3.99 at the store, the farmer gets 14¢. Pick up a ten pound bag of russet potatoes and you’ll pay $6.99 but the farmer makes just $1.04. Finally, for a pound of top sirloin steak you’ll pay $9.99 but the rancher gets just $1.82 of that in return.
