House Transportation Committee Approves $500 Billion Infrastructure Package
WASHINGTON, DC – After more than 24 hours of debate that included the consideration of 177 amendments, the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee approved the INVEST in America Act. The legislation is a key piece of the House Democrats’ infrastructure proposal and puts an emphasis on tackling maintenance needs while targeting a path toward zero emissions from the transportation sector. The INVEST in America Act now moves to the House floor. The Committee adopted amendments from both sides of the aisle, including 34 Republican amendments and 23 Democratic amendments, and the bill now moves to the House floor. Specifically, the legislation authorizes nearly $500 billion over five years to address some of the country’s most urgent infrastructure needs. One section focused on rebuilding rural America with more than half of the funds going to State Departments of Transportation to improve safety, and to repair roads and bridges. Another goal is to ensure better coordination between States and broadband entities that will allow for better access to broadband for rural America.
