FTC Adopts Stronger ‘Made in USA’ Rules
WASHINGTON, DC – The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) voted to adopt a final Made in USA rule, based upon a number of public comments – including those from the livestock industry – that will strengthen its enforcement of the new standard. Explaining considerable interest from farmers, ranchers and others in the meat and ag industry, the FTC voted 3-2 for stricter standards in relation to meat products that are currently labeled as born, raised and slaughtered in the U.S.A., even when the standard is misleading.
On that announcement, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said USDA will now conduct their own rulemaking to address the concern that the voluntary “Product of USA” label may confuse consumers about the origin of regulated products. “After considering the many comments received by the FTC and USDA on this issue, we are initiating a top-to-bottom review of the “Product of USA” label that will, among other things, help us to determine what that label means to consumers” Vilsack proclaimed.
