Despite Drought, Mexico Growing More Cotton in 2021
MEXICO CITY, MEXICO – Mexico’s cotton production is forecast to increase 22 percent for this marketing year on increased global prices and ongoing drought conditions favoring cotton production over other more water-reliant crops. According to the Foreign Agriculture Service, final production and fiber quality is likely to fluctuate, as producers continue to face a number of challenges including seed, water, and input availability. Poor quality supplies are typically destined for export to Asia, as the domestic industry prefers higher quality supplies and imports from the United States. Another area of concern for growers is the pending ban on the use of glyphosate on crops south of the border. Consumption is also forecast lower on less consumer purchasing power following a significant contraction in the Mexican economy in 2020 and a forecasted sluggish recovery.
