Deadline Approaching for Pasture and Rangeland Insurance Program
WASHINGTON, DC – As portions of the country slip further into drought, one approaching deadline is important for landowners and cattlemen. Producers may enroll in the Pasture, Rangeland, and Forage (PRF) insurance program between now and November 15, 2020. The program is a risk policy that provides annual protection for those who rely on forage for their operations. USDA’s Risk Management Agency (RMA) runs the program and to qualify, a producer must have an insurable interest in the livestock grazing the land. Though insurance is required on all the operational acres, producers may choose what portions of the operation and which months are the most important to cover. The program utilizes a rainfall index to determine indemnity payments and the base value is calculated based on estimated stocking rates and current hay prices.
