Congress Passes Continuing Resolution and Avoids Government Shutdown
WASHINGTON, DC – There will be no government shutdown, at least not until December after the Senate passed a Continuing Resolution (CR) by a vote of 65-35 on Thursday.
Later in the day, the House voted 254-175 to send President Biden a bill that would fund the government through December 3, 2021, which also included $28.6 billion for natural disaster recovery and $6.3 billion for resettlement of refugees from Afghanistan.
With Congressional passage and a Presidential signature, without the debt limit language, Livestock Mandatory Reporting (LMR) will be extended until December 3, 2021 as well.
Now attention turns to whether the House can pass a $1.5 trillion infrastructure package, already approved by the Senate. Also whether Senate leadership can find common ground with moderate members Joe Manchin (WV-D) and Kyrstin Sinema (AZ-D) who appear to be against anything more than $1.5 trillion in new spending through a reconciliation package for human infrastructure.
The House passed, along party lines, the reconciliation bill which includes at least $3.5 trillion in new spending, but progressive Democrats are threatening to sink the traditional infrastructure package if the Senate Democrats don’t pass their larger bill.
