Changes Announced Relating to Mexico’s Cattle Export Program

AMARILLO, TX – USDA Veterinary Services recently announced changes to the bovine tuberculosis testing requirements for certain imported cattle from Mexico, which went into effect last Monday (February 15, 2021). These changes reclassify certain Mexican states and zones within those states to a non-accredited status, which can only import cattle into the U.S. for immediate slaughter. According to Texas Cattle Feeders Association (TCFA) cattle originating from or transiting through the reclassified regions to move into the U.S. through April 16, 2021, will still be allowed in the U.S. This restriction also applies to cattle held at Export Gathering Centers and comingled with animals originating from or transiting through ineligible regions prior to export. After the date, however, cattle originating from or traveling through the reclassified regions can only be imported for immediate slaughter and consigned to specific pre-approved facilities.
