California Leads Nationwide Milk Production Increases for June
WASHINGTON, DC – Milk production in the United States expanded by more than 3 percent during the month of June, according to the latest data from USDA.
The increase in the 24 major producing states during the month was led by 3 percent increases, for the most part, from the top four producing states. California remains the top producing state with 1.7 million milk cows producing 3.5 million pounds of milk during the sixth month of the year (up 3.1 percent). Wisconsin remains the number two state with 1.3 million head delivering 2.6 million pounds, for an increase of 2.8 percent.
Idaho milked 640-thousand head for a 3.6 percent production increase; New York milked 1.3 million for a 3.1 percent increase but the lone star state experienced the biggest growth in output when the 620-thousand head herd in Texas produced 1.2 million pounds – equal to a 7 percent year over year increase.
Production per cow in the 24 major States averaged just over 2 thousand pounds for June, but the number of milk cows hit 9 million head, more than June 2020, but 1,000 head less than the previous month.
