California and Iowa Largest Recipients of Ag Assistance
KANSAS CITY, MO – The California agricultural industry was the top beneficiary of the federal government’s response to the coronavirus pandemic according to the latest from the Economic Research Service (ERS). Not only did the “Golden State” have the largest share of agricultural production in 2019, but it also claimed the largest share of Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) and Coronavirus Food Assistance Program (CFAP) payments, at $3.1 billion.
The state with the largest share of total payments relative to their 2019 value of production however was Massachusetts which raked in 12.2 percent, followed by South Dakota at 11.1 percent. The state with the second-largest share of ag production, behind California, was Iowa where producers found $2.4 billion in assistance.
