Burger King Pulling “Green” Whopper After Education Campaign

AMARILLO, TX – Two weeks ago, Burger King launched a media campaign promoting their reduced methane emissions Whopper with a simple twitter message “breathe the farts of change.” The campaign included the claim that livestock was responsible for nearly 15 percent of all global greenhouse emissions and that a feed ration including lemongrass could drastically reduce methane emissions from cattle. Burger King and its parent company Restaurant Brands International was not prepared for the repercussions from the livestock community and have now pulled their commercials from television.

The latest move was in response to tweets from the leading expert in livestock air quality, Dr. Frank Mitloehner at the University of California-Davis. “IT’S. NOT. THE. COW. FARTS. Nearly all enteric methane from cattle is from belching,” Mitloehner explained. “Suggesting otherwise turns this serious climate topic into a joke. Reducing methane is a HUGE opportunity. That should be a goal. But we shouldn’t trivialize it for trendy marketing.”

Mitloehner says Burger King did reach out to him and heard clearly that the content was demeaning to farmers and was open to guidance on their research.
