Beef and Pork Exports Strong While Lamb Struggles

DENVER, CO – As U.S. beef and pork producers celebrate good export demand, lamb producers are dealing with a much different scenario. According to the U.S. Meat Export Federation (USMEF), lamb exports are down 20 percent in volume, year-to-date, and in value by 24 percent. The news is not all bad when digging deeper into data from USDA. In terms of volume, lamb muscle cuts in April increased 145 percent over the same month last year. Unfortunately, the value of muscle cut exports fell 11 percent. As for buyers of U.S. lamb muscle cuts, volume growth to Mexico increased 700 percent during the month and value expanded 123 percent. Demand remained strong as well for both Egypt and Kuwait.
