Washington to Become First State Banning Gasoline Vehicles

OLYMPIA, WA – Two states have already jumped out and announced plans to ban new gasoline vehicle sales by the year 2035. Both California and Massachusetts are developing plans to reach their goals, which have been conveyed by executive order at the state level. After a recent vote by the Washington-state legislature, Governor Jay Inslee could push his state to the head of the class by banning new gas car sales a full five years before any other state. The Clean Cars 2030 initiative would require state utilities to prepare for the transition by making charging stations available state-wide. The ban on new fossil-fuel vehicles would also ban the sale, purchase, and registration of non-electric cars beginning with the model year 2030, and would also include any gas-powered vehicles purchased in another state and brought into Washington. Seattle’s KOMO News reports that the measure can only take effect if the state also approves a tax on vehicle miles traveled, which would help pay for new transportation infrastructure in the state.
