Soybean Acreage Increases Highlight Annual Prospective Plantings Report

WASHINGTON, DC – Once every year, USDA releases their estimates on prospective plantings in the United States. For 2021, that report places the expectations for soybean plantings at 91.1 million acres, a 5 percent increase over last year. Wheat acres are expected to expand 5 percent for all classes of wheat, while corn plantings should increase less than 1 percent. Decreased acreage will be found this planting season for cotton (down 1 percent), hay (down 1 percent), and sunflowers (down 29 percent). Finally, it was no surprise based upon China’s appetite for U.S. sorghum that farmers will plant 18 percent more acres this season compared to 2020.
