U.S. Pork Exports Stumble While Lamb Exports Improve

WASHINGTON, DC – January pork exports, in volume, slipped 9 percent in January (248,656 metric tons) compared to one year ago and export values fell 13 percent ($643 million) according to the latest data from USDA. Pork muscle cut exports were down 11 percent in volume (208,234 metric tons) and 15 percent in value ($551 million), while variety meat shipments trended modestly higher than a year ago. While pork exports to China and Hong Kong declined as expected, exports to Japan increased during the month and demand was very strong in Central America, the Philippines, and the Caribbean. In the meantime, there’s optimism in the U.S. lamb industry as exports climbed 7 percent in January (1,027 metric tons) but the value declined 43 percent ($1.2 million), based on demand from Mexico and Canada.
