Vilsack Returns to Lead USDA While Making History

WASHINGTON, DC – For the first time in the history of the United States, a former Secretary of Agriculture (30th) will be returning to the Whitten Building as the leader of the United States Department of Agriculture. Though there have been some Secretaries that have served for more than 4 years under one President, until today, none have served under two different administrations whereby they left office and returned. Tom Vilsack served as Secretary of Agriculture under the Obama Administration and following his confirmation on Tuesday by the Senate (92-7) and now will serve under President Joe Biden as the Department’s 32nd Secretary. Vilsack, after serving just 8 days on the job, will become the second longest-serving Secretary in U.S. history. During his Senate confirmation hearing, he explained that USDA will be working to end the COVID-19 pandemic, will address racial justice, equity, and climate change under his leadership.
