USDA Releases Latest Monthly Cattle on Feed Estimates

WASHINGTON, DC – Currently, according to USDA, feedlots have their second-highest inventory in 25 years. This is according to Friday’s Cattle on Feed Report that estimated the nation’s herd at 12.1 million head, a 1 percent year-over-year increase. Placements into feedlots during the month of January were 3 percent higher than in the same month of 2020 (2.02 million head). Some market analysts were caught off guard by the 6 percent drop in marketings of fed beef cattle during January (1.82 million head) as well as the other disappearance number of 56,000 head, a 4 percent increase over January 2020.
