Recent Rain and Snowfall Help to Lessen Drought
AUSTIN, TX – The latest drought map for conditions as of January 5, 2021 shows the largest one-week improvement since September 2018. With additional rain and sometimes snow for parts of the state since the first few days of the new year, additional improvements are expected with next week’s update says Dr. Mark Wentzel, Texas Water Development Board hydrologist. Drought conditions now affect 58 percent of the state, down from 81 percent last week and higher than the 38 percent at this time last year. Last year was one of steadily increasing drought for the state of Texas and was beginning to be compared to the historic drought ten years ago. Weather forecasters, however, continue to point to an expectation of dry conditions into the spring as La Nina conditions remain in place for the foreseeable future.
