Another Round of Food Boxes Coming from USDA

WASHINGTON, DC – Following the President’s announcement of additional funding up to $1 billion, USDA is planning to extend current contracts to deliver food boxes through September 18, 2020. In the second round of purchasing and distribution, USDA purchased more than $1.1 billion of food through extended contracts of from the first round of the program as well as new contracts focused on Opportunity Zones in order to direct food to reach under-served areas, places where either no boxes have yet been delivered, or where boxes are being delivered but where there is an additional need. In the third round which begins September 1, 2020, USDA plans to purchase combination boxes to ensure all recipient organizations have access to fresh produce, dairy products, fluid milk, and meat products. The first round of purchases which concluded June 30, 2020, saw more than 35.5 million boxes delivered in the first 45 days.
