Federal Assistance for Livestock Producers Dealing With Drought

WASHINGTON, DC – With more than half of the Southwest dealing with drought conditions, USDA’s Farm Service Agency (FSA) reminds producers about the Livestock Forage Disaster Program (LFP).

The program provides payments to eligible livestock owners who have covered livestock and who are also producers of grazed forage crop acreage that have suffered a loss of grazed forage due to a qualifying drought. Weaned livestock for commercial use are eligible, including beef cattle, buffalo/bison, dairy cattle, equine, goats, and sheep, but must have been grazing the eligible land through the normal grazing period during the drought.

Affected producers may apply for LFP on native or improved pastureland with permanent vegetative cover as well as with crops planted specifically for grazing livestock, including forage sorghum, barley, oats, rye, triticale, wheat, ryegrass, or annual crabgrass.

Program eligibility triggers based on a county’s D2 or greater drought status on the U.S. Drought Monitor. More information is available at www.Farmers.gov.
