Pending Legislation Encouraging Farmer Participation in Carbon Markets

WASHINGTON, DC – As society continues the debate on protecting the environment, a bipartisan group of Senators has introduced the Growing Climate Solutions Act. The legislation is aimed at allowing farmers and ranchers the opportunity to participate in carbon markets, through climate-smart practices and carbon sequestration. According to the National Corn Growers Association (NCGA), if passed, it would create a “One Stop Shop” website where growers could learn about, certify and participate in carbon markets. It would also create a certification process, through USDA, for carbon credits through environmentally-friendly practices. NCGA also suggests the legislation would organize an advisory council for the Agriculture Secretary, and would regularly update lawmakers on challenges and opportunities within the system.
