US and UK Open Free Trade Agreement Negotiations

WASHINGTON, DC – On the heels of a couple of recent trade deal signings, U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer formally began trade talks with the United Kingdom (UK) last week. Ambassador Lighthizer and his UK counterpart, International Trade Secretary Liz Truss met electronically to open the door on a free trade agreement (FTA) that he said would contribute to the long-term health of our economies”. The two negotiators agreed that an FTA is a priority for both countries as they share a commitment to secure an ambitious agreement especially as the countries attempt to recover from the challenges posed by COVID-19. The UK recently left the European Union (UK) after successfully negotiating an exit strategy (Brexit).
