Industry Continues to Analyze USDA’s Prospective Planting Numbers
WASHINGTON, DC – Corn planted area for all purposes in 2020 is estimated at 97.0 million acres, up 8 percent or 7.29 million acres from last year. Compared with last year, planted acreage is expected to be up or unchanged in 38 of the 48 estimating States. Iowa, Illinois, and Nebraska are the top producers, with Minnesota and Kansas rounding out the top five states. Soybean planted area for 2020 is estimated at 83.5 million acres, up 10 percent from last year. Compared with last year, planted acreage is expected to be up or unchanged in 22 of the 29 estimating States. Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, and Missouri are the top four states to plant in 2020, with Indiana and South Dakota tied for fifth. All wheat planted area for 2020 is estimated at 44.7 million acres, down 1 percent from 2019. This represents the lowest all wheat planted area since records began in 1919. Kansas and North Dakota are tied for the top spots, while Montana, Texas, and Oklahoma complete the top five states. All cotton planted area for 2020 is estimated at 13.7 million acres, down a fraction from last year. Upland area is estimated at 13.5 million acres, down less than 1 percent from 2019. American Pima area is estimated at 228,000 acres, down 1 percent from 2019. Texas will plant more than 53 percent of all the acres this season. Georgia, Oklahoma, Mississippi, and Arkansas round out the top five states in 2020. Sorghum planting is expected to increase 11 percent from last year to 5.8 million acres. Kansas will plant 8 percent more – remaining the top producing state – while Texas will remain second with an increase of 16 percent. Colorado, Oklahoma, and South Dakota round out the top five producing states.
