Panic Buying, Traffic Jams Causing EU Food Delays
BRUSSELS, BELGIUM – In the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, grocery stores around the world are facing panic buying. Supply chains are strained with cross-border traffic checks across the European Union (EU) adding to the problem. Despite pleas from government officials, confirming that food and supplies are not running out, shoppers continue to strip store shelves bare. Politico reports that Nestle, the world’s largest food company says all the food is getting to the warehouses, but with delays. EU ag leaders are proposing “green lanes” to expedite trucking after some traffic jams last week stretched for 50 miles, causing major delays in normal deliveries.
