High-Level Talks Announced As Trade War Escalates
(WASHINGTON, DC) The United States and China have agreed to hold high-level trade talks early next month. The announcement comes after a phone call between both sides this week and the meeting will follow the trade team talks between the two countries in the next two weeks. The trade war is now well into its second year with both sides firing off tariffs and retaliatory tariffs in the dispute. The U.S. is acusing China of unfair trade practices including forced technology transfers, theft of intellectual property and protectionist trade barriers. Some analysts believe the Chinese government is willing to wait out the disagreement in hopes of President Trump losing the election in 2020, while Trump has warned that he’ll be even tougher should he secure a second term in office. Earlier in the week, China filed a complaint with the World Trade Organization (WTO) and it also follows recent U.S. victories over the Chinese in the international courts regarding unfair ag trade and domestic support for their farmers.
