Lighthizer Questions Lawmakers For Better Chinese Negotiation Plan

(WASHINGTON, DC) Based upon a “very unbalanced relationship with China”, American jobs are at risk. That’s the assessment of U.S. Trade Ambassador Robert Lighthizer, testifying on Wednesday in front of the House Ways and Means Committee. The Chief Negotiator for the Trump Administration told lawmakers that he doesn’t know if tariffs alone will stop the Chinese from cheating, or even agreeing to play right in the global trade market. He did say that one thing that won’t work is talking to them because “we’ve done that for 20 years” and it’s not working. The trade dispute between the two countries went on high-alert over a year ago as President Trump announced tariffs to attack the unfair trade practices of China. Lighthizer said it’s impossible to predict when an agreement might be reached, but he also said that unless someone has a better idea on forcing China to obey trade rules, then tariffs are all the U.S. has in its toolbox today.
