All But Four Congressional Members Represent Agricultural Districts

(WASHINGTON, DC) Nebraska Rep. Adrian Smith represents the top producing Congressional District in the United States according to USDA’s Congressional District Profiles and Rankings Report released Wednesday. Smith’s 3rd District encompasses 65,000 square miles, two time zones and 69 counties of the Husker state and produced $16.5 billion in 2017. Iowa’s 4th congressional district ranks second nationwide in value of ag products sold with $16 billion in sales (Rep. Steve King). The 1st district of Kansas ranks third ($14.2 billion), represented by Dr. Roger Marshall. While California freshman Rep. TJ Cox serves the 21st district, home of the fourth largest congressional district ($9.8 billion). South Dakota’s single House member, Dusty Johnson, claims fifth ($9.7 billion). Minnesota’s 7th district is sixth ($9 billion) and home to the Chairman of the House Agriculture Committee Collin Peterson. Rep. Mac Thornberry represents the 13th district of Texas and the seventh largest in the country ($8.8 billion). North Dakota as a state is eighth on the list ($8.2 billion) while Washington’s 4th district ($6.6 billion) and Minnesota’s 1st district ($6.5 billion) round out the top ten ag producing districts in the United States. Interestingly, all but four of the 435 members of the House have agricultural production in their district.
